Acatenango is a stratovolcano in Guatemala, close to the city of Antigua. The high mineral content and good drainage of the volcanic loam, combined with the cooler tropical climate, makes the region ideal for coffee growing. Mario Pérez’s farm, Finca la Pampa, is located in the Acatenango municipality at 1,600 meters. Mario’s family has owned the farm for over a century, and they’ve been growing coffee there since 1945 – making Mario a 4th generation coffee grower. Since taking over the farm’s operations, Mario has implemented quality control techniques and processing methodologies to improve sustainability and cup characteristics.
Finca la Pampa is Rainforest Alliance Certified, meaning the farm complies with the standards set in place by the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN). These standards include ecosystem conservation, wildlife protection, and fair treatment and good working conditions for workers.
